Baking Soda, scientifically known as Sodium BiCarbonate, is mostly popular for its usage in baking. It makes the dough rise faster than natural yeast and there for the baking process much faster. But besides being a great baking ingredient, baking soda has a many household and health benefits too.

Here are 20 benefits and usage of Baking Soda.

  • Treat heartburn - Heartburn or acidity, is painful and simply annoying. A night out for your favorite spicy food, chaat treat at the local shop or any other reason, acidity has the power to ruin the whole day (and maybe even the night) for you. Baking soda can help treat in this situation. Dissolve a teaspoon of baking soda in a glass of cold water and drink the mixture slowly. But do not ignore and consult your physician of you have more than usual episodes of heartburn.

  • Mouthwash - Adding mouthwash to your daily dental hygiene routine is a great way to keep your teeth healthy. It can reach every corner of your mouth that you could not clean witha toothbrush. Baking soda is used by many people as mouthwash. Some popular studies show that it can freshen your breath. The recipe for baking soda mouthwash is simple. Add 1/2 teaspoon of baking soda to half a glass of warm water, and then swish as usual.

  • Soothe mouth sores - Mouth sores are small but painful. Though more evidence is needed, some research has found that baking soda mouthwash is great for soothing pain if you rinse your moth with it once a day.

  • Whiten your teeth - You can whiten your teeth to a certain extent by using baking soda as a home remedy. Many studies show that some toothpastes that contain baking soda work better at whitening teeth and removing plaque than toothpaste without baking soda.

To make a baking soda bath, add 1–2 cups of baking soda to a lukewarm bath. Make sure the affected area is soaked thoroughly. For more specific areas, you can create a paste with baking soda and a bit of water. Apply a thick layer of paste to the affected area.

  • Neutralize fridge odors - Is your fridge suffering from bad smell of food gone bad? Then maybe you need help from baking soda too. Just fill a cup with baking soda and place it at the back of your fridge and it will help in absorbing the bad odor.

  • Air freshener - Store bought air fresheners only mask bad smells, they do not eliminate the. They are also mixed up with chemicals that can be bad for your health and environment. Baking soda is perfect for this need. It is safe to use. It neutralizes odor particles in the air and removes the bad smell. To create a baking soda air freshener, you will need: a small jar, 1/3 cup baking soda, 10–15 drops of your favorite essential oils, a piece of cloth or paper, string or ribbon. Add the baking soda and essential oils to the jar. Cover it with the cloth or paper, and then secure it in place with the string.

  • May whiten your laundry - Baking soda is a good way to keep your laundry clean. It fits into your budget too. You can add 1/2 cup of baking soda to your regular amount of laundry detergent. It also helps soften the water, which means you may need less detergent than usual.

  • Kitchen cleaner - It is a versatile kitchen cleaner also. It removes tough stains and eliminates foul odors. To use, make a paste of baking soda and water. Apply this paste to dirty or greasy surfaces and scrub thoroughly. You can clean ovens, stained coffee cups, stained marble, grease stains, kitchen tiles, clogged drains, tarnished silver, microwaves with baking soda in your kitchen.

  • Remove garbage odor - Kitchen cam smell really bad due to decaying garbage. But you can use baking soda to eliminate garbage odors up to 70%. Sprinkle some baking soda into your garbage bag or bin and baking soda will do the rest.

  • Remove stubborn carpet stains - You can remove even stubborn stains from your precious carpets & rugs by using baking soda & vinegar mixture. Here’s how - First cover the stain with a thin layer of baking soda. Now fill a spray bottle with equal amounts of water & vinegar and spray it on the stain. Wait for sometime and let the surface dry. Scrub with a brush and wipe the rest.

  • Multipurpose bathroom cleaner - Instead of using harmful chemical cleaners for your bathroom spaces, use baking soda to clean it. It cleanse and disinfects. It also eliminates odors. You can clean bathroom tiles, toilets, showers, bathtubs, bathroom sinks with baking soda. Use a paste of baking soda and a bit of water to clean with a cloth. Just rub the mix onto any surface you want to clean and wipe down after 15-20 minutes.

  • Clean fruits and veggies - Your fruits and vegetable can be cleaned thoroughly with baking soda. Soaking fruits and veggies in a baking soda wash is the most effective way to remove pesticides and germs. Please note that this method doesn’t remove pesticides that have penetrated the skin of the fruit.

  • Polish silverware - Commercial silver polishes are expensive and might harm the silverware in the long run. Baking soda is a handy alternative to it. For this you will need: Aluminum foil, 1 cup of boiling water, 1 tablespoon of baking soda, 1/2 cup of white vinegar. Add the baking soda to the aluminum baking pan and slowly pour in the vinegar. Next, pour in the boiling water and then place the silver in it. Tarnish will remove immediatley. Heavily tarnished silverware may need to sit in the mixture for up to 1 minute.

  • Save a scorched pot - Its a nightmare to clean a scorched pan with burnt food. But you can save a scorched pot easily with baking soda and water. Sprinkle a good amount of baking soda over it and add water to cover the burnt part. Boil it for some time. Let it sit for some time. Later, scrub the pan and the burnt bits will come off easily.

  • Homemade weed killer - You can sprinkle some baking soda over garden weeds that are growing inside wall cracks, pathways and other corners in your house. But do not use baking soda in your gardens because it can kill your other plants too.

  • Shoe deodorizer - Stinky shoes? It can be quite embarrassing. But luckily, baking soda can freshen bad smelling shoes too. Just sprinkle two table spoon of baking soda into thin pieces of fabric. Stuff these as bundles inside your shoes. Remove them when you want to wear your shoes again.

  • Drain Cleaner - If you mix baking soda and vinegar, it gives you the perfect and chemical free drain cleaner. Let the combination bubble up for 15 minutes in a bowl or mug, then pour it down into your drain hole. Wait 10 min and pour hot water down the drain.
