Let’s teach you a few simple basic methods to keep your wooden cutting boards clean from bad bacteria and last a long long time. Although daily hand washing with tap water and soap is okay to keep your boards clean, but to make them hygienic and last longer and keep those pesky bacteria away (especially if you cut raw fish or meat on it) you might need to put in some extra work. You don’t need any fancy cleaners, only these household cleaners that you probably already have in your homes.
Vinegar is your best friend in cleaning your kitchen. Vinegar has acetic acid that can disinfect the board and keep you safe from common sicknesses such as Salmonella and E.coli. Just add vinegar to a clean kitchen towel and scrub your wooden cutting board with it. It will also remove all bad odours from the wood.
Take a damp kitchen towel and add some salt to it. Now, rub this over the hand washed surface of your wooden cutting board. Salt is a good abrasive that will remove all of the stains and gunk. You can also just mix salt & vinegar or lemon to remove any odors from the board.
#3. Hydrogen Peroxide
Hydrogen peroxide is a sure fire bacteria-killer, especially after you cut chicken or other meat. To get rid of all germs from the surface of your cutting board, use a kitchen towel to wipe clean the board with hydrogen peroxide. Make sure to rinse the board down with water before using it again.
#4. Baking Soda
Make a paste of baking soda and water to clean your wooden cutting boards. Rinse completely with warm water afterwards. Baking soda is non toxic and safe to use. It is a mild alkali and can dissolve dirt and grease easily in water.
Hate the smell of raw onion and garlic coming from your cutting boards? Then rub a half of lemon all over to remove all the bad smell. Wash it with warm water and wipe clean with a dry kitchen towel. Its not strong enough to sanitise your cutting board, but it will definitely remove any lingering smells.
